Nam Vuong, the Southern King
南王
Although the Le were puppets under the rule of the Trinh lords, both the Trinh and the Nguyen paid at least symbolic allegiance to
the Le who officially held the throne. While the Le held the title of emperor, the Trinh and Nguyen held hereditary titles such as lord and king, Chua主，and Vuong王, in Vietnamese.
尽管黎皇是郑主的傀儡，但是郑、阮还是要对其表示象征性的忠诚，毕竟他名义上还是国家的元首。当黎氏继承皇帝头衔的时候，郑氏和阮氏也相应地继承主和王的称号（郑氏被称为郑主，阮氏被称为广南王）。
The coin below bears than name Nam Vuong, which means Southern King, the characters Cu Bao place the coin around the time of Canh Hung, 1740-1786. The Cu Bao and the coin's overall style possibly place the coin in the north with the Le and the Trinh.
The left character 月 on the reverse means moon but the right character is not so clear. It might be 日 for sun or one of the
Chinese cyclical character Ky 己 or Ti 巳.
钱文上有“南王”，表示南方的王，“巨宝”二字出现在钱币上则是在景兴年（1740-1786）。 “ 巨宝”二字和钱币的整体风格将该钱定位于北方的黎皇郑主身上。 背文左边是“月” 意思是月亮，右边的字就不太明了了，可能是“日”（意思是太阳），也可能是“己”或“巳）。
The characters of 日月 mean sun and moon, or combined might mean Minh 明 for bright or Ming as in the Ming dynasty. Both
Chinese and Vietnamese coins often used dots and crescents to symbolize the sun and moon but rarely used Chinese characters.
"日月”表示太阳和月亮，合在一起是个“明”字，“明”意思是“光亮的”，或者表示“大明朝”的“明” 。 中国和越南古钱中通常是使用点和月纹来象征性地表示太阳和月亮，很少有使用汉字的。
In the Chinese cyliclical system, 己 is the sixth of 10 heavenly stems and 巳 is the sixth of 12 earthly branches. The earthly branches are used for the 12 months of the year thus 巳月 is the sixth month of the Chinese calendar, or April. However, the reverse looks more like 日月 or 己月 than 巳月. The reverse could mean April but only if 己 was mistakenly used in place of 巳.
在中国历法中， “己”在十天干中位列第六，“巳”在十二地支中也是位列第六。 地支用来表示一年十二个月， 巳月也就是中国农历一年当中的六月。 尽管背文看起来更像“日月”或“己月”，但是也有可能“己”字错写成了“巳” 。
The coin is now worn but when first cast it probably weighed about 3 over grams. All facts combined suggest the coin has historical relevance and is not a private mint coin cast for commercial purpose.
这枚钱已经有了（流通中自然磨损的）包浆，当初刚铸造出来时应该超过3克。所有的特征都表示这枚钱与黎皇郑主的历史有关联，绝非是贸易用的私铸钱。
Other Nam Vuong coins are Known, some of which use the legend Nam Vuong Thong Bao. Some coins have a blank reverse while others have reverse inscriptions. One reverse has a non-Chinese legend that resembles a Manchu mintmark used in China at this
time, but the characters are not formed correctly for a Manchu mintmark.
还有的南王钱使用“通宝”作钱文，有些是光背的，有些则有文字。 有一种南王钱的背文不是汉字，而是满文，但是满文位置放得不对（逆背）。
Two Trinh lords held titles based on the name Nam Vuong and both ruled around the time of Canh Hung.
有两代郑主的称号中有南王二字，并且都处在和景兴差不多的年代。
Just before Canh Hung, Trinh Giang ruled from 1729 to 1740 and held the title of Uy Nam Vuong 威南王, which means the
Honorable Southern King.
就在景兴之前，郑杠从1729年至1740年任郑主，号“威南王”。
At the end of Canh Hung, Trinh Khai ruled from 1782 to 1786 and held the title of Doan Nam Vuong 端南王, which means the
Righteous Southern King.
在景兴末年，郑楷从1782年至1786年任郑主，号“端南王"。
Thus, a coin of this style from this time with the legend Nam Vuong Cu Bao could belong to either Trinh Giang or Trinh Khai.
因此，南王巨宝这种钱币可能属于郑杠和郑楷二人中的一个。
The possible reference to the month April on the reverse is interesting. Trinh Giang became lord in the 10th month of 1729 but didn't adope the title of Uy Nam Vuong until the April of 1730. If the reverse did refer to April, it probably celebrates Trinh Giang's new
title of Uy Nam Vuong.
背文表示四月的可能性是比较有趣的，郑杠于1729年十月成为郑主，但是得到威南王的称号是在次年的四月，如果背文确指四月的话，则有可能是为了庆祝郑杠得到威南王称号而铸造的。（不明白这里为何提到四月，巳位于十二地支第六，应该是六月，Barker搞得叫人糊里糊涂，个人看法是日月）
Trinh Giang was a powerful lord who ruled the time of three short-lived Le emperors, none of who are known to have iussed coins.
郑杠是一位非常有魄力的郑主，在他统治时期有三个短命皇帝，没有一个发行过钱币。
Although the power of the Le Kings was mostly symbolic, it might take some daring for someone to issue their own coins.
Trinh Giang was known as a treacherous and daring leader. In 1732, he forced emperor Le De Duy Phuong from power for having an affair with Trinh Cuong's wife and later had him killed.
尽管黎皇的权力只是徒有虚名， 但是要在其统治下公然发行自己的钱币则是一件非常需要勇气的事情（冒天下之大不韪），郑杠正是这样一个路人皆知的奸险勇猛的实际掌权者。1732年，他逼迫黎后废帝退位，诬陷他与郑?妻子私通，后来干脆杀了他。
Trinh Khai was lord during the last years of Canh Hung, which was also the time of the Tay Son rebellion. This was a time of great
turmoil and by 1787,
郑楷则是在景兴末年成为郑主，也就是爆发西山起义的时候，1787年在越南历史上是个大动乱时期。
the Tay Son defeated both the Le emperors and the Trinh lords. It's possible that a Trinh lord would have issued his own coins
during such a time of turmoil.
西山起义军打败了黎皇郑主， 也有可能是某位郑主趁着乱世发行了自己的钱币。
Although there are many Canh Hung styles to compare with, the Nam Vuong Cu Bao is clearly similar to coins of Cabh Hung period. Therefore, the calligarphy and style of these coins are consistent with the time of these Trinh lords.
我们可以拿南王巨宝跟数量众多的景兴钱作比较，它们有着很明显的共同之处。
The Nam Vuong Cu Bao is also similar to coins of emperor Le Du Tong, who ruled until 1729 when Trinh Giang came to power. One coin from Le Du Tong's first reign of Vinh Thinh used the Chinese cyclical character 巳 Ti, on the reverse to denote the year 1709.
南王巨宝还跟黎裕宗时期的钱币很有些相似之处，裕宗（年号永盛、保泰）一直统治到1729年，也就是郑杠成为郑主的那一年。有一种永盛通宝钱的背文有个“巳”字，用来纪年，也就是1709年。
The nature of these coins suggests they are historical significance. If so, there's a possibility that they were issued by one of these
two Trinh lords.
这些钱币的性质表达了它们的历史重要性，如果推断没错的话，这种钱币就应该是由两位郑主的其中之一发行的。
